studio events and workshops

30 Day Challenge June 1st - 30th!

June means the official start of summer - long days on the beach, cold drinks with friends on patios, barbecues and parties... So to ensure you keep balanced during the dog days of summer (and to make sure you feel and look great doing it) get on the right track with our annual Spring 30 Day Challenge!

WHAT IS THE 30 DAY CHALLENGE? WHO CAN DO IT?
The concept of the 30 Day Challenge is simple - you do 30 yoga practices within 30 days.  Ideally, those classes would be in the hot room, but we know that life gets in the way sometimes, so out-of-studio classes count too!  Anyone can do the Challenge, regardless of level/ability - it definitely takes some discipline and commitment... Are you up for it?

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The cost of the Challenge is $155/$130 for students/seniors, and absolutely FREE for Moksha Monthly Members.  The cost includes unlimited yoga, treats, prizes, and a party at the end.

IS IT HEALTHY TO DO THAT MUCH HOT YOGA?
Yes! Just ask any past Challenger and they can tell you how amazing 30 days of sweating and stretching can make you feel.

I'M GOING OUT OF TOWN, CAN I STILL SIGN UP?
Sure! Yoga can happen anywhere, so why not!?! Ideally, you will do as many classes as possible in the hot room, but if you have to miss a few days then you
can either double up (two classes in one day!) or you can do your own practice.  ?You can also purchase a Moksha on the Go digital download here, which you can take anywhere!

I'M IN! HOW DO I SIGN UP!
As of May 21st, we will have a sign-up sheet at the front desk. We are limiting the Challenge to 100 participants, so make sure to register early!

Grow Your Yoga In-Studio Events

Grow Your Yoga, our 30 day off-the-mat challenge, has begun! There are over a thousand yogis in Canada and the US that have taken the challenge, and committed to raising $100 000 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. (Edward Norton explains more about the MWCT here.)

Each week, as part of the challenge, we will focus on one of the Pillars of Moksha Yoga, with the intention of bringing that aspect of our yoga off the mat and into the world!

All month long there will be special in-studio events, as well as prizes to be won. You can sign up any time during the month, and join our MYH fundraising team.

Our in-studio events will be fun, informative and open to everyone. They are free, but we do ask that you make a small donation (minimum $5) for the MWCT. Here is a little rundown of what's going on:

Week 1: May 1st - May 7th, BE HEALTHY

Eating Healthfully and Mindfully with RHN Carina Moreira; Sunday May 5th, 2pm-3pm at MYH

You know you should be eating organically, right? And is that the same as GMOs? Is it better to buy local foods or organic foods? How do vegetarians get protein anyway? MYH Energy Exchanger and Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant, Carina Moreira, will give a short presentation about what it truly means to have a healthy diet, helping to de-mystify some of the most common questions about food and nutrition. And of course, healthy snacks will be served!

Week 2: May 8th - May 14th, BE PEACE

Intro to Meditation with Martha Deeks, Sunday May 12th 2pm-3pm, at MYH

If you've ever tried meditating, you will know that it is HARD! So, to help you find a sitting practice that works for you, MYH teacher Martha Deeks will lead a short Introduction to Meditation session, focusing on different meditation techniques. We can't promise it will be easy, but if you find a sitting practice that you can work with then we do promise it will be worth it!

Week 3: May 15th- May 21st: BE ACCESSIBLE

Blocks & Straps Workshop with studio owner Joanna Thurlow Murphy, Sunday May 19th 2pm-3pm at MYH

You've seen that pile of blocks and straps at the back of the hot room, right? But uh, what are you supposed to do with them? Co-owner of Moksha Yoga Halifax, Bedford and St. John's, Joanna Thurlow Murphy, will lead a short workshop about how to incorporate props into your practice, making your Moksha more accessible.

Week 4: May 22nd May 30th: REACH OUT

My Time with the Maasai presented by MYH Ambassador Simon Swanek + Community Pot Luck Party + Kick-off to our silent auction! Sunday May 26th, 2pm-3pm

How serendipitous that our freshly-minted MYH Ambassador, Simon Swanek, has actually spent time in East Africa with the Maasai people! Simon will tell you all about his experiences there, and then, in celebration of a month of growing our yoga, we will eat drink and be merry with a community pot luck. This will also be the first opportunity to bid on our awesome silent auction items (all proceeds going to the MWCT, of course!)

Community Partner of the Month: Wildflower Clothing

Celebrating its 13th year in business this month, Wildflower Clothing has proven itself as one of the mainstays on the Halifax retail scene. The owner, Jill Strong (who sweats it out at Moksha on the regular) has often been named "Best Salesperson" and "Best Dressed" in The Coast's Best of Halifax poll, and anyone who has ever shopped at Wildflower knows exactly why!

We're such huge fans of Jill and Wildflower, and we're proud to feature them as our Community Partner of the month (and super excited that VIP Members get a 10% discount!). We chatted with Jill about what's hot for hot yogis, and how she's still going strong after 13 years!

In 10 words or fewer, tell us what makes Wildflower so awesome?
We're a special little find off the beaten path.
[And so close to MYH! Head down Dresden Row two blocks to Clyde Street, turn right and voila!]

Which products are you loving right now? Which ones do you think our hot yogis would love?
I am loving a line called Bella Dahl. They do amazing relaxed blouses that feel incredible on. There are a variety of colours and styles and I've found it hard to choose just one! The hot yogis would love our new Fouta towels. These towels can be used as a blanket, a towel, a throw, a meditation/yoga mat - the possibilities are endless. They come in a variety of juicy colours and make a perfect gift.

You're celebrating your 13th year in business this month - what's your secret to longevity?
I don't think I have a secret. I have made it my mission to provide the best customer service possible in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere.  I do my best to listen to my customers and tailor my buying accordingly. I am fortunate to have a loyal clientele who allow me to do what I love.

What's the best thing about doing business in downtown Halifax?
I am fortunate to live and work in downtown Halifax. It's a choice. Being part of and contributing to the local fabric of our community means the world to me.

If your yoga mat could talk, what would it say?
It would say "breathe" and "don't give up".
